Module summary

The purpose of this module is to consolidate and extend your prior learning to demonstrate your knowledge and skills in a final year capstone project. You will undertake a research, educational/outreach or social justice capstone project in which you will apply and develop competencies (knowledge, skills, and behaviours) to a problem relevant to your discipline. Through this, you will work with active researchers or practitioners in the field to contribute and produce insights and potential new ideas.

Objectives

The aim of this module is for learners to participate in current practice and research linked with their discipline, to develop and deliver on an enquiry-based project. This will allow students to apply and build on many of the skills and knowledge gained earlier in their programme. Working with their mentors, students will enhance and gain new experiences and competencies (knowledge, skills and behaviours), which will be showcased in the final assessments.

The final project output or solutions will be communicated to multiple different audiences, highlighting potential application of their research findings.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Apply the knowledge, skills and behaviours gained earlier in their programme to a problem relevant to their discipline;
2. Demonstrate appropriate choice and application of enquiry-based techniques to their project;
3. Gather or generate information, critically analysing this information to address the identified problem;
4. Communicate through, written, graphical and verbal means, to different audiences or stakeholders;
5. Recognise and apply health and safety, ethical, and regulatory issues to their projects as appropriate.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Demonstrate appropriate digital capabilities in creating the final written and oral outputs.

Syllabus

Students will undertake a research, educational/outreach or social justice enquiry -based capstone project. They will apply experiences and competencies gained earlier in their programme to a problem relevant to their discipline, creating or contributing towards an output or solution to this problem.

They will communicate through multiple means, and to different audiences, the process, outputs, and outcomes of their work.

In the process, they will build on and extend existing competencies including leadership, self-management, and advanced communication skills.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will have four hours of meetings with their Mentor over the course of the project where formative feedback on the project and any developing outputs or outcomes will be provided. They will deliver a formative oral communication, be required to gather feedback on this and reflect on this feedback. In the linked “Research skills and Professional Development” module, they will complete a capstone preparatory note, a capstone project design plan, and a professional development reflective portfolio. They will be provided with formative feedback on the preparation and project design assessments, with the project portfolio being used by mentors to monitor progress throughout their capstone project experience.
